The University Press of Colorado (UPC) and the Society for American Archaeology Press (SAA Press) have launched a new copublication agreement exemplified by two series, Current Perspectives and Archaeology in Action. This agreement capitalizes on UPC’s longstanding strengths in the field of archaeological publications and SAA’s reputation as the preeminent archaeological society in the United States to transfer SAA Press’ backlist over to the stewardship of UPC, while leaving ample room to forge ahead with new publications in the two aforementioned series.

Both series are helmed by series editor Jennifer Birch (University of Georgia) and UPC press editor Allegra Martschenko and are actively seeking new proposals in the field and subfield of archaeology.

Current Perspectives: This series seeks nonfiction books that address important practical issues in archaeological research and practice such as ethics, fieldwork practices or collections management, community-based archaeology, and collaboration with Native or descendant populations. Books in the series might study archaeology at the local or global level, across geographic lines, and through time. They will be of interest to professionals interested in contemporary concerns and best practices in archaeology, as well as students and instructors of undergraduate or graduate courses concerned with archaeological practice or history.

Archaeology in Action: This series seeks nonfiction books that provide up-to-date summaries or overviews of the current state of archaeological knowledge or method in a region, a topic of broad continental or hemispheric interest (e.g. Peopling of the Americas), or a topic of theoretical or methodological interest (e.g., the use of modeling in archaeology). Books in the series should be of interest to archaeologists not expert in the topic area desiring a comprehensive but brief overview, as well as students and instructors of undergraduate or graduate courses.

Backlist SAA Press titles are now up for sale on the UPC website and will be displayed at the upcoming Society for American Archaeology 2023 conference in Portland, Oregon. UPC Director Darrin Pratt will be at the UPC booth (#702) during exhibitor hours, and series editor Jennifer Birch will be at the SAA booth (#407) in Exhibit Hall A from 10-11 am on Friday March 31st or at the UPC booth from 10-11 am on Saturday April 1st.

All proposals for these series should follow the press submission guidelines, and submission will be evaluated by the press acquisitions staff, the series editors and/or editorial board, as well as outside experts.
