The Sheep Industry of Territorial New Mexico: Livestock, Land, and Dollars by Jon Wallace has been selected for the 2025 Fray Francisco Atanasio Domínguez award from the Historical Society of New Mexico! This award recognizes an outstanding publication or significant contribution to historic survey and research in New Mexico or Southwest Borderlands history.
"Wallace’s Sheep Industry of Territorial New Mexico is a well-researched history of each episode of New Mexico’s development in the territorial period, including annexation, the Gold Rush years, the Civil War period (including pacification of Indigenous people and entrance in the Unites States textile market), the boost of the railroad, and the leveling off of the early 20th century. I appreciated how well Wallace integrated the subject of the sheep industry into a well-rounded presentation of political, social, and cultural matters along with his economic focus."
Congratulations Jon!
