An account of Hieromonk Gideon (Gavriil Fedotov), who was charged with inspecting the Russian Orthodox churches in Alaska and Kamchatka in the early 19th century. Gideon's reports provide invaluable historical details about Russian America and represent the first in-depth description of the Alutiiq-speaking people of Kodiak Island, Alaska.

Lydia T. Black immigrated to the United States in 1950. She was Professor Emerita at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and in 2000 was awarded The Order of Friendship by the Russian Federation for fostering cooperation between the Russian and American scholarly communities. Dr. Black published extensively on Russian and Alaskan history and anthropology, including a biography of St. Innocent titled A Good and Faithful Servant (1997). In 2004, she was honored as Historian of the Year by the Alaska Historical Society for Russians in Alaska, 1732–1867.
